Frequently Asked Questions

Will this extension fit my Springfield Echelon?

Yes, the Shield Arms +5 Magazine Extension is designed specifically for Springfield Echelon pistols. It fits OEM Springfield Echelon 17-round magazines only. All Echelon variants (standard, Compact, etc.) use the same magazine, so this extension is compatible with any Springfield Echelon model that uses the standard 17-round magazine.

Do I need to buy a new spring for this extension?

No. The Shield Arms Echelon +5 Extension is engineered to work with your existing OEM magazine spring. This makes installation simpler and more cost-effective. Simply remove your factory base plate and install the Shield Arms extension using your existing spring—no additional parts required.

What does "easy-access floor plate" mean?

Unlike traditional magazine extensions that require you to completely remove the extension to access the spring and follower, our easy-access floor plate design allows you to service these components without removing the extension from the magazine body. This innovative feature makes cleaning and maintenance significantly faster—especially valuable for competition shooters who need to clean magazines between stages or professionals who maintain equipment regularly.

Is this extension USPSA legal for competition?

Yes. The Shield Arms Echelon +5 Extension has an overall length of 141.25mm, which meets USPSA division requirements. The 22-round total capacity (17+5) is compliant for divisions that allow magazine extensions. Always verify current competition rules for your specific division, as regulations can change.

How difficult is installation?

Installation is straightforward for anyone familiar with basic magazine disassembly. Remove your existing base plate following standard magazine disassembly procedures, then reassemble the magazine with the Shield Arms extension in place of the factory base plate. The process takes just a few minutes and requires no special tools. For detailed step-by-step instructions, visit our installation guides page.

Will this affect magazine reliability?

No. When properly installed, the Shield Arms Echelon +5 Extension maintains or improves feeding reliability. The extension is precisely engineered to work with your existing OEM spring and follower, and the easy-access floor plate design allows for regular maintenance to ensure continued reliable operation. Each extension undergoes function testing before shipment to verify proper operation.

Can I use this for concealed carry or duty use?

Yes. Many law enforcement professionals and concealed carriers use magazine extensions to maximize capacity for duty or defensive applications. The additional five rounds can provide a tactical advantage in critical situations. However, always verify that extended magazines fit properly in your holster and magazine pouches before relying on them for carry purposes. Some agencies may have specific policies regarding magazine modifications.

What's the difference between this and the pre-installed version?

The Springfield Echelon +5 Pre-Installed Magazine Extension includes a complete OEM magazine with the Shield Arms extension already professionally installed, tested, and ready to use. This standalone extension allows you to upgrade your existing magazines. Choose the pre-installed version if you need additional magazines, or choose this extension to upgrade magazines you already own.

Will this work with aftermarket magazines?

This extension is designed specifically for OEM Springfield Echelon 17-round magazines and is not guaranteed to fit aftermarket magazines. Aftermarket magazines may have dimensional variations that affect compatibility. We recommend using OEM magazines for optimal fit, function, and reliability.

How do I access the spring and follower with the easy-access design?

The easy-access floor plate features a simple hand-operable mechanism that allows you to access the magazine internals without removing the extension body from the magazine tube. This design enables quick spring inspection, cleaning, or follower service in seconds rather than requiring full disassembly. Detailed operation instructions are included with your extension.

Is the extension durable enough for duty use?

Absolutely. The Shield Arms Echelon extension is CNC-machined from billet 6061 aluminum—the same material used in aerospace and defense applications—and features a Type 2 anodized finish for corrosion resistance and durability. This construction provides superior impact resistance compared to polymer base plates while maintaining reasonable weight. The extension is built to withstand the rigors of professional use and is backed by our lifetime warranty.

Can I return the magazine to standard capacity?

Yes. If you wish to return your magazine to factory configuration, simply reinstall your original OEM base plate. The Shield Arms extension installation is completely reversible and causes no permanent modification to your magazine. Keep your original base plate for future use if desired.

Who Should Buy This Extension?

  • USPSA/IPSC Competitors: Maximize stage capacity while staying compliant with division rules, plus benefit from easy maintenance between stages
  • Law Enforcement Officers: Enhance duty weapon capacity for increased firepower during critical incidents
  • Tactical Trainers: Extended capacity reduces reload frequency during high-volume training courses and scenarios
  • Competition Shooters: Quick magazine maintenance thanks to easy-access floor plate design means less downtime during matches
  • Defensive Carriers: Additional five rounds provide enhanced defensive capability while maintaining reasonable magazine length
  • Range Enthusiasts: Spend more time shooting and less time reloading during practice sessions
  • Springfield Echelon Owners: Anyone seeking to maximize their Echelon's potential with increased capacity and simplified maintenance

ODA Green

Used on: magazine extensions, magwells

ODA's (Operational Detachment Alpha) are the boots on the ground operational teams of a Special Forces Group. This color began as a special run for a deployed ODA. In continued support we have decided to continue the color as a standard offering and donate a portion of the proceeds to The Green Beret Foundation. Finish is anodized in green.

QPQ Nitrocarburizing Surface Treatment

Used on: magazines, barrels, slides

QPQ Nitrocarburizing is a type of surface treatment used to enhance the durability and corrosion resistance of metal parts. The process involves heating the metal in a controlled environment, where nitrogen and carbon are introduced to the surface of the metal. This forms a thin layer of a hard compound called "nitrides," which increase the surface hardness of the metal.

During the QPQ Nitrocarburizing process, the metal is immersed in a special salt bath and heated to high temperatures. The salt bath contains a mixture of chemicals that release nitrogen and carbon, which penetrate the surface of the metal. The process is carefully controlled to ensure that the nitrogen and carbon penetrate to a specific depth, creating a uniform layer of nitrides on the metal's surface.

The resulting nitride layer provides many benefits to the metal parts, including increased hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. This treatment helps to increase the lifespan and durability of metal parts, making them more reliable and long-lasting.

Any “scuffing” you see in the surface finish is completely normal, and will not affect the durability or corrosion resistance of the steel.

Electroless Nickel Plating

Used on: magazines

Silver electroless plating offers superior electrical conductivity and corrosion protection with excellent deposit uniformity and adhesion properties. This bright, reflective finish provides outstanding solderability and contact resistance while maintaining the consistent thickness and coverage that electroless plating processes are known for. Black electroless nickel plating provides these same exceptional deposit properties - including lubricity, hardness, and corrosion resistance - but with a fully conductive and uniform black surface finish that combines superior performance with an attractive dark appearance.
